Gen4olive is an #H2020 project that aims to bring #olive genetic resources closer to producers and olive growers. It focuses on rainfed olive varieties resistant to the most demanding conditions.
28 November 2022 was the date chosen for the installation of measurement and monitoring devices. The devices installed by BrioAgro are a model called ViTA, custom-configured for the needs of the project.
The DSB ViTA (or ViTA Tracking Device) is a datalogger powered by solar energy and with different communications systems (Sigfox, Lora, LTE-M, Narrow Band or 3-4G), the system uses the one that provides the best coverage. As BrioAgro works with multi-operator, it always receives the best signal, regardless of which company has the nearest repeater tower.
In both cases, the following sensors have been connected to this ViTA:
SOIL.
- Humidity sensor at 40 cm depth
- Humidity sensor at 20 cm depth
- Temperature sensor at 20 cm depth
The temperature is measured in ºC, while the soil humidity is measured in litres/m3 (the amount of litres in a m3 of soil) and in % with respect to the field capacity, with 100% being the Field Capacity value and 0% the Permanent Wilting Point value.
To apply these relative values, it is necessary to use the BrioAgro soil calibration protocol, which uses an algorithm tested on all types of crops, soils and microclimates, to establish the exact values.SURFACE. ENVIRONMENT
- Temperature (ºC)
- Relative Humidity (%)
- Water Deficit (g H2O/kg air)
- Pressure (mBar)
- Leaf wetness (%)
- Active thermal integral (ºC)
- Effective thermal integral (ºC)
- Accumulated chilling hours (ºC)
Farm nº 1. Arbequina variety: Lora de Estepa, 41564, Seville, Andalusia, Spain.
Installed just at the moment of harvesting, the sector where the sensor was placed was harvested days before.
Farm nº 2. Manzanilla: Estepa, 41560, Seville, Andalusia, Spain
It is installed just weeks after the harvest. In this farm, in addition to the placement of sensors, a video camera with high resolution and 330º rotation was installed, ready for outdoor use.

Sectorised satellite monitoring.
BrioAgro will also provide the GENOLIVE project with the data collected from the Sentinel satellite monitoring of 15 indicators, which are refreshed every 5 days, with a resolution of 10 x 10 m per pixel. These are the following indicators:
1 GNDVI, 2 MSAVI, 3 MSAVI2, 4 NDII, 5 NDMI, 6 NDRE, 7 NDVI, 8 NDWI, 9 NDWI2, 10 RECI, 11 SAVI, 12 SIPI1, 13IPI3, 14 TCARI/OSAVI, 15 TSAVI.
